Beginner Circus Classes

These classes are completely beginner friendly. They require NO previous experience, and are open to students of all fitness levels and body types. All of our aerial classes have a student-instructor ratio of no more than 6:1. This small size allows us to work with each student individually, and at their own skill level. These classes accept circus credits.

+  Tightwire

This class requires a 90min credit type which is different than our regular circus and fitness credits. In this class, we will practice walking on the tight wire. The tight wire occupies a special place in the Western imagination, offering symbolic dimensions unmatched by any other circus apparatus. Students will learn basic and advanced tight wire skills. We start on a low wire (one foot) and slowly walk our way up (six feet). Open to all levels. Thick socks required.

+  Aerial Yoga

Designed for participants of all fitness levels this class utilizes an aerial fabric hammock (that hangs roughly 3 feet off the floor) for an elevated take on traditional asanas. We swing sway breathe and explore traditional yoga poses with a new relationship to gravity while staying close to the floor. The class begins on the mat moves to expanded heights and takes us home to a new sense of center. Beginners to both yoga and aerial are welcome in any aerial yoga class.

This class is suitable for all skill levels - whether your first time in a circus class, or a student with 1000 lessons under their belt, you are welcome here! Trapeze was the first apparatus coach Sam learned, and she believes understanding trapeze enhances performance on all other aerial equipment. This class will focus specifically on triple trapeze (a bar and rope apparatus with three side-by-side spaces for humans to occupy). Unlike other apparatuses, this one emphasizes teamwork and timing. Alongside learning individual skills, as we develop confidence we will put together larger shapes that incorporate 4, 5, or even 6 bodies on the same trapeze!

+  Partner Balancing

Partner Balancing (also known as AcroYoga) is a fun, beginner friendly class that involves body weight sharing. This workshop will be for students who are brand new to acro. Each move we learn will involve three roles: a base, a flyer, and a spotter. We encourage students to try all three roles, but it's not a requirement. We primarily focus on L-basing, which generally involves the base being on the ground on their back and lifting the flyer with their feet. We normally shuffle up the group throughout the class so everyone gets to work with different partners, however this is NOT a requirement. Come alone or with a partner, and if you prefer to work exclusively with a partner, just let us know. There is a component of physical touch that is inherent to this class. We emphasize consent, and everything is optional! You will find yourself laughing a lot, having fun, and making new friends! Aside from being loads of fun, this class will also help you build strength, flexibility, and balance, and the skills make an excellent addition to any performers toolbox!

These are classes that require some previous experience. Talk to any NOCA instructor, or contact us at (423) 212-6622 if you're unsure whether you qualify.

+  Open Gym

Open gym is a time for students to practice moves they have learned in class. It's also a great way to meet the other Night Owls and make new friends! Teaching or skill sharing during open gym is not allowed. Trying moves that you found online or that you haven not yet learned from an instructor is not allowed. You must have taken at least 10 classes in the specific apparatus you'd like to use.

+  Rope and Straps

Prereqs: Ability to hold one's body weight fully and hold body up in a tuck position with bent arms. This class is suitable for a variety of skill levels. As these apparatuses are inherently demanding of ones upper-body, it is advised that students attending have happy, healthy wrists and shoulders (or are very capable of listening to their bodys signals and scaling back when necessary). Explore a wide variety of conditioning exercises, then skill build on one or both apparatus, with sequences growing each week. When students develop abilities on straps and rope, every other apparatus becomes easier!

+  Intermediate/Advanced Performance

This class is suitable for students who are comfortable climbing to the ceiling on a rope or silk, and can execute multiple mounts on trapeze, lyra, or sling. In this class, we will focus primarily on one apparatus for 4 weeks at a time, digging deeper into concepts such as how to: safely execute dynamic movements, incorporate emotion and intention into movement, work creatively as an individual and with a group, connect with an audience, count music, and more! Expect to receive new skills, improvisational prompts, and occasional forays into non-aerial pursuits such as tumbling, pyramids, dance, and prop manipulation. As a side note: for those who find dynamic skills, drops, and release moves terrifying, you are still welcome here! Between our three coaches, we have a collective expertise that caters to our adrenaline-junkies AND those who prefer advanced technical puzzles without the pressure of learning and executing drops, release skills, and momentum. Theres something for everyone here! Please reach out to us if you have questions; wed love to chat!

+  Intermediate Lyra Exploration

A lyra class for intermediate and advanced students who love technical puzzles, creative movement, and exploring new pathways. We will build on foundational material from beginner classes, work on fundamental dynamic skills, and learn how to play and create. Each class will begin with a group warm up and conditioning on the lyra. We will then move on to skill building, sequence creation, and exploring technically challenging but creatively exciting new skills and planes of the hoop. Some classes will be serious, some playful, often both. Some classes will be skill-focused, some will be collaborative, and some will be very exploratory. Caroline will offer a wealth of prompts and resources to help you develop your own style of movement on lyra, challenge how you think about this apparatus, and discover new ways to connect with your hoop. Prereqs: double knee hang, ability to hold yourself up with bent and straight arms, multiple entries for mounting the hoop, willingness to push yourself creatively.
